I created the boot usb in my macbook ( using unetbootin) and wanted to install Linux ( tried both Linux mint and Ubuntu) on another PC. I changed HDD boot priority with USB stick first. I saw some message on black screen, and soon the screen changed to a black screen with a blinking cursor on line 1. Cannot proceed from here. This document illustrates overview of PS3 Linux boot process and how to install boot loader.
Create Linux Disk Partition
First of all, user needs to initialize built-in HDD. With conventional PC this could be done as part of Linux installation, however with PS3, user need to decide what amount of HDD assign to Linux. Fig. 1 shows it’s concept.

Install Boot Loader
As conventional PC, we need to install a boot loader into PS3 to boot Linux. On the other hand, we need a special program to install a boot loader on special reserved area in PS3 system flash rom. The installer is called as “OtherOS Installer”.
Due to requirements of boot loader on PS3, such as capability of using USB human interface devices, “kboot’ has been utilized as a boot loader for Linux on PS3.
In other words, before staring Linux installation, you need to get “OtherOS Installer” from SCEI web site and customized “kboot” from Linux distributor, respectively. Then you install “kboot” to PS3, using “OtherOS Installer”. Please refer manual of “OtherOS Installer” and installation manual of Linux distribution, for details.
The customized “kboot” which you installed, may contain corresponding proper installation program for Linux distribution, you choose.

Switch System to Boot
Once you installed “kboot” into PS3. You can switch the environment to be booted with boot selection menu from GameOS. On the other hand, from Linux environment, you also can switch the environment, using 'boot-game-os' command.

As you all know, the web browser on our ps3 just flat out stinks. Finally, with windows we get great browser now. Unlike the crappy browser that comes installed, we can now tailor it the way were used to browsing the internet. Yes, this means you can add any browser you like now, mine happens to be Firefox because its fast, but you can use wich ever you want.
Game On:
Ofcourse you will still be able to play any and all new ps3 games Linux just permits you with many more choices. With the right emulator, like Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, you can play all your games on one system, Atari, SNES, PS1 , just to name a few.JAM'S, FLICK'S, PIC'S AND MORE
This is something that used to really get blood boiling, OK, Imagine this, your downloading a movie on the internet ( wich can take hours sometimes), your waiting for it to finish, you pop it in, and... what! cant play this file! I hate that, but not anymore, you will soon be able to veiw pretty much any file that could view on a PC or Mac right on the big screen.

Installing Linux on the ps3 is no different from any other PS3.
PS3 Linux OtherOS
When you install Linux on your system, it will not replace the Sony OS. You will have both systems on your console and you will be able to choose which one you use from the start menu on the playstation.
If for whatever reason you would ever want to remove the Linux OS, you can easily do so. Unistalling the software will not cause any damage and your PS3 will be restored to back to its boreing old self again.

PS3 LINUX HACKPlease, if you want linux on your ps3, just pay for the software. Unless you are an experienced hacker with very programming skills, Do Not manually try to install linux on your console. You will kill your system and it wont be able to be fixed. I read about this happening every day.
