Traditionally, board and batten siding starts with wide vertical planks (boards), which are then joined together by thin vertical strips (battens) to cover the seams. Homesteaders and farmers would use sawmills to cut the long boards, and the battens were put in place to make the structure as airtight as possible. I normally make sure I have a material definition close and let it use that as a template. The main thing you'll want to change is the surface hatch definition, and there is a vertical siding hatch in the OTB hatch definitions (although the battens are awfully narrow). That said the render material is for new wood and not painted.
